I am currently using a Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz kit I bought – used – not too long ago, for that Gretsch sound … I used to have 5-piece Pearl Forum, which I have sold.
The configuration of the Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz as below:
Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz Configuration – 30 Oct 2009:
- Toms: 12″x8″, 14″x14″
- Bass: 18″x14″
- Snare: Alternates between a Pearl Dennis Chambers 14″x6.5″ 4-ply Maple Snare, a Ludwig Acrolite LM404 14″x5″ “Black Galaxy” Snare with Canopus Vintage Chrome Classic 20-strand Snare Wires and a Canopus 14″x5.5″ The Maple Snare
My current cymbals, as listed below, are used between the above 2 drum kits.
- 13″ Bosphorus Traditional Crisp Hats
- 13.25″ Ziljian K Custom Hybrid Hats
- 14″ Ziljian K (Regular) Hats
- 14″ Ziljian K (Regular) Mastersound BOTTOM Hat ONLY
- 14″ Zildjian (A)vedis New Beat Hats
- 16″ Zildjian K Custom Dark Crash
- 17″ Bosphorus Traditional Thin Crash
- 18″ Zildjian K Custom Dark Crash
- 18″ Bosphorus Antique Light Crash with 2 Bosphorus rivets
- 20″ Zildjian K Custom Medium Ride
- 20″ Zildjian K Custom Dark Ride
- 20″ Zildjian K Custom Flat Top Ride
- 22″ Bosphorus Stanton Moore Wide Ride
- 22″ Bosphorus Masters Vintage Ride
I have loved, used and traded away quite a few cymbals and the above are the ones so far I have I kept and used extensively on both these 2 kits. As you can see, the cymbals are trending towards a more open, vintage and jazzy sound, which I am learning about and playing now.
Of course, if Santa or any Godfather out there is listening, I would love to have a Yamaha Absolute Maple series drums one day …
