This is the second take where I separated the audio stereo recorder from the video camera (1st take here was done using the in-built microphone recorder of the video camera)

The stereo recorder was done using the Zoom H2 Stereo Recorder. This 2nd recording sounds much better with a much-focused sound.  The sound from the 1st recording was really all over the place.

This is me playing and comping to Satin Doll, which is one of the most popular jazz standards used in many open jazz jams and also a big band favourite.

I used a background track that was performed by Paul Gonsalves and Roy Eldridge. Song is in AABA Form of 8 bars each. Recorded 2 Forms, comping to the 2nd Form which is Roy’s Trumpet lead.

So, after many months of playing on my old Pearl Forum kit here:

I have “upgraded” the kit to a used Gretsch Catalina Club 4-pc Jazz kit that I bought for a steal. So, this is what I have after setting it all up:

Drumset configuration can be found here. The interesting part is that while I kept all the stock heads for the toms (Evans Genera G1), I used a 18″ Remo Fiberskyn 3 Ambassador (FA) Bass head for that vintage, traditional jazz/bebop and big band orchestral sound.

What can I say ? It sounds as advertised and I am totally pleased with the bass sound it emits. I will not describe it as “THUMPY” as my previous Remo Coated Powerstroke 3 Bass head on my Pearl 20″ Kick. However, the punch is still there (for a 18″ by 14″) and the sound is – in a fews words – “BIG & FULL-of-BODY“.

It tooks some time to get used to the bass sound since I have grown so used to the Coated Powerstroke 3 on my 20” Kick for so long BUT I am sure I will grow to love it as much and most importantly, play around it.

Now, I am left wondering if I should change both the rack and floor toms to the same Fiberskyn 3 Ambassador as well …

So, after so much comtemplation, I fell for it finally. The reason is because the local drum-shop is offering a Christmas sale that is so hard to resist.

The item I am referring to which I have bought is the Pearl Demon Direct Drive Bass Pedal (Single)- P3000D.

Three words describe this pedal: S-I-L-K-Y   S-M-O-O-T-H   F-A-S-T. Gosh, I really love the feel of it. What I think/sing, I play. Gotta Love it !!!

That said, even with the discount, it is still costly BUT in comparison with its competitors (DW, AXIS) of the same high-end league of bass pedals, it is still comparatively cheaper.

Heavenly Smooth, Wickedly Expensive, Sinfully Mine 🙂

I have 2 drumsets currently. One is a very old cheap-ish Pearl Forum Fusion series which I still used extensively. The other is a used Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz kit I bought – used – not too long ago, which serves as my portable kit and of course, for that Gretsch sound …

The configuration of the 2 sets as below:

Pearl Forum Set Up - 30 Oct 2009

Pearl Forum Configuration – 30 Oct 2009:

  • Toms: 10″x8″, 12″x9″, 14″x14″
  • Bass: 20″x16″
  • Snare: Alternates between a Yamaha Tour Custom 14″x6″ 6-ply Maple Snare and a Pearl Dennis Chambers 14″x6.5″ 4-ply Maple Snare

Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz Set Up 30 Oct 09

Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz Configuration – 30 Oct 2009:

  • Toms: 12″x8″, 14″x14″
  • Bass: 18″x14″
  • Snare: Alternates between a Yamaha Tour Custom 14″x6″ 6-ply Maple Snare, a Pearl Dennis Chambers 14″x6.5″ 4-ply Maple Snare and the stock 14″x5″ 8-ply Mahogany Snare with 30-degree bearing edges

My current cymbals, as listed below, are used between the above 2 drum kits.

I have loved, used and traded away quite a few cymbals and these are the ones I kept and used extensively on both these 2 kits. As you can see, the cymbals are trending towards a more open, vintage and jazzy sound, which I am learning about and playing now.

Of course, if Santa or any Godfather out there is listening, I would love to have a Yamaha Absolute Maple series drums with a nice Canopus Maple snare one day …

Hello World !

Welcome. As a clarification note: I dont make drums or drumware of any kind. This is a pure word play off my main source of living and income – in Software.

That said, I am a drummer and a learning drummer at that. I mean, arent we all ? Jazz drumming gets a lot of my time at the current moment and I will randomly (not frequently) posts of my hardware, learnings, videos or gigs.

Thanks for being here. Stay tuned.
